Microsoft Sentinel

Microsoft Azure SIEM

Synopsis

Creates a target that ingests log messages into Microsoft Sentinel workspace tables using Data Collection Rules (DCRs). Supports automatic table selection, ASim normalization, advanced filtering options, and autodiscovery capabilities.

Configuration

The following are the minimum requirements to define the target.

Core Settings

FieldRequiredDefaultDescription
idYUnique identifier
nameYTarget name
descriptionN-Optional description
typeYMust be sentinel
pipelinesN-Optional post-processor pipelines
statusNtrueEnable/disable the target

Authentication

FieldRequiredDefaultDescription
tenant_idY*Azure tenant ID (not required with managed identity)
client_idY*Azure client ID (not required with managed identity)
client_secretY*Azure client secret (not required with managed identity)

*Required only when not using managed identity

Stream Configuration

FieldRequiredDefaultDescription
endpointYDCR ingestion endpoint or Resource ID
rule_idNDefault Data Collection Rule (DCR) ID
streamN-Target table streams (string array)
streamsN-Detailed stream configurations
buffer_sizeN1048576Buffer size in bytes (1MB)
keep_phantom_fieldsNfalseKeep fields not defined in DCR schema
drop_unknown_stream_eventsNfalseSilently drop events for undefined streams
cache.timeoutN300Stream cache timeout in seconds

Automatic Table Selection

When stream is not specified, tables are automatically selected based on input type:

Input TypeTarget Table
Windows Event LogCustom-WindowsEvent
Windows Application LogCustom-WindowsEvent
Windows System LogCustom-WindowsEvent
Windows Security LogCustom-SecurityEvent
SyslogCustom-Syslog
Linux Audit ReportCustom-CommonSecurityLog
Windows Audit ReportCustom-CommonSecurityLog

Available Tables

Standard Tables (Prefix: Custom-)

WindowsEvent SecurityEvent CommonSecurityLog Syslog

ASim Tables (Prefix: Custom- or Microsoft-)

ASimAuditEventLogs ASimAuthenticationEventLogs ASimDhcpEventLogs ASimDnsActivityLogs ASimFileEventLogs ASimNetworkSessionLogs ASimProcessEventLogs ASimRegistryEventLogs ASimUserManagementActivityLogs

Autodiscovery

VirtualMetric Director provides autodiscovery capabilities that automatically configure Data Collection Rules and their associated streams.

How It Works

  • Uses Resource IDs to discover DCRs and their configurations
  • Automatically detects table schemas and validates fields
  • Prevents phantom fields through schema validation
  • Adapts to environment changes automatically
  • Maintains performance through caching (default: 5 minutes)

Required Permissions

  1. For Data Collection Rules:

    • Role: Monitoring Metrics Publisher
    • Scope: Each DCR with name starting with "vmetric"
  2. For Resource Group:

    • Role: Monitoring Reader
    • Scope: Resource Group containing your DCE
warning

Always assign the Monitoring Reader role at the Resource Group level, not at the Subscription level.

For detailed explanation, refer to our Microsoft Sentinel Automation and Microsoft Sentinel Autodiscovery documentation.

Examples

Basic Autodiscovery

Configuration using Resource ID-based autodiscovery:

- id: 1
name: auto_sentinel
type: sentinel
properties:
tenant_id: "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000"
client_id: "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000"
client_secret: "your-client-secret"
endpoint: "/subscriptions/00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000/resourceGroups/myResourceGroup/providers/Microsoft.Insights/dataCollectionEndpoints/myDCE"

Managed Identity Authentication

Configuration using Managed Identity authentication instead of App Registration:

- id: 2
name: managed_identity_sentinel
type: sentinel
properties:
endpoint: "/subscriptions/00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000/resourceGroups/myResourceGroup/providers/Microsoft.Insights/dataCollectionEndpoints/myDCE"

Filtered Autodiscovery

Configuration with specific stream filtering and custom cache timeout:

- id: 3
name: filtered_autodiscovery
type: sentinel
properties:
tenant_id: "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000"
client_id: "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000"
client_secret: "your-client-secret"
endpoint: "/subscriptions/00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000/resourceGroups/myResourceGroup/providers/Microsoft.Insights/dataCollectionEndpoints/myDCE"
streams:
- name: "Custom-WindowsEvent"
- name: "Custom-SecurityEvent"
cache:
timeout: 300 # 5 minutes
keep_phantom_fields: false
drop_unknown_stream_events: true

High-Performance Configuration

Configuration optimized for high-volume ingestion:

- id: 4
name: optimized_sentinel
type: sentinel
pipelines:
- normalization
properties:
tenant_id: "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000"
client_id: "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000"
client_secret: "your-client-secret"
endpoint: "/subscriptions/00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000/resourceGroups/myResourceGroup/providers/Microsoft.Insights/dataCollectionEndpoints/myDCE"
buffer_size: 5242880 # 5MB
format: "asim"
stream:
- "Custom-ASimProcessEventLogs"
- "Custom-ASimNetworkSessionLogs"
note
  • Data is automatically normalized to the specified format (default: ASim)
  • Stream configurations are cached for improved performance
  • Large messages are stored temporarily and retried during finalization
  • Use Resource IDs instead of URLs for autodiscovery features
warning
  • Large buffer sizes increase memory usage
  • Enabling drop_unknown_stream_events silently discards unmatched events
  • Disabling keep_phantom_fields may result in data loss for undefined fields
  • Always test configuration changes in a non-production environment first
